Lemon tree hotelの物語：問いから生まれた、僕らの挑戦～「幸せ」の新しい選択肢をつくる

僕たちの活動は大きな二つの問いから始まった。
情報やモノにすぐ手が届く暮らし。
だけど、当たり前と思っていたモノ・コトに目を向けたとき、わからない自分たちがいた。
野菜はどのように作られているのか。
家を建てるのはどれだけ大変なのか。
わからないなりにまずはやってみよう、その姿を次世代を生きる子どもたちに見てもらおう。
僕たちは人口100人の男木島の文化・自然を舞台に、
正解のない明日に向けて、皆さんと実践知を高めながら豊かな暮らしをつくっていきます。
Lemon Tree Hotel: A Story and Its Raison d’être Our Challenge Born from a Question: Creating New Choices for “Happiness”
“How can people live rich and fulfilling lives?” “What can we pass on to the next generation?”
Our activities began with these two significant questions. In today’s society, overflowing with information and material goods, we found ourselves unaware of the essence of things and events we had taken for granted.
How are vegetables grown?
How difficult is it to build a house?
“Even if we don’t know, let’s just try.”
We want children, who will live in the next generation, to see us taking on these challenges.
On Ogijima, an island with a population of 100, we are creating a rich life by fostering practical knowledge with everyone, moving towards an unknown future with no single right answer, all against the backdrop of the island’s culture and nature.
運命に導かれた宿の物語
この宿は、私自身の人生を旅する中で見つけた、一つの「答え」です。
物語の始まりは、幼い頃に夢中になった絵本の世界でした。ページをめくるたびに広がる美しい風景や建物に、私は心を奪われました。やがて少年時代、その憧れは世界中の景色へと広がっていきました。そして私のキャリアは、色彩を操るヘアカラーリストとして、髪の毛を美しく彩ることから始まりました。
しかし、その一方で、心は常に、旅先で出会う多様な建築や世界の美しいリゾートへと惹かれていました。そこには、単なる美しさだけでなく、ゲストだけでなく働くスタッフさえもが幸福に見える、心から安らげる空間が広がっていました。
そんなある日、私は化学物質過敏症という突然の転機に直面し、これまでのキャリアをリセットすることとなりました。この出来事は、私にとって大きな挫折でした。
しかし、この挫折こそが、私をこの瀬戸内海の小さな離島へと導いてくれたのです。
ここで私は、再び、心の中で温めていた風景と向き合いました。幼い時に胸ときめかせたファンタジー溢れる原風景。自然と調和することで、心と体を休める空間。それは、私が追い求めていた「安らぎ」であり、そして真の「幸せ」そのものでした。
A Hotel’s Story Guided by Destiny
This hotel is an “answer” I found while traveling through my own life.
The story began with the world of picture books I was immersed in as a child. I was captivated by the beautiful landscapes and buildings that unfolded with every turn of the page. As I grew older, that admiration expanded to landscapes around the world. My career then began as a hair colorist, manipulating colors to beautifully adorn hair.
However, my heart was always drawn to the diverse architecture and beautiful resorts I encountered on my travels. There, beyond mere beauty, were spaces of profound peace where not only guests but also the staff seemed happy.
One day, I faced a sudden turning point: chemical sensitivity, which forced me to reset my entire career. This event was a major setback for me.
Yet, it was this very setback that led me to this small island in the Seto Inland Sea. Here, I once again confronted the landscapes I had cherished in my heart. The fantasy-filled original landscapes that thrilled me as a child. A space to rest body and mind by harmonizing with nature. This was the “peace” and true “happiness” I had been searching for.
「繕うことのラグジュアリー」 Lemon tree hotelの誕生
男木島において、特殊な立地に建てられた古民家を保全してゆく必要性もあり、この「Lemon tree hotelプロジェクト」は立ち上がりました。
島の建築に詳しい安部良氏のサポートのもと、私たちは島独自のサーキュラーエコノミー（循環型経済）の方法を考え、島の立地や自然と調和の取れたデザインを試行錯誤しながら作っています。
2024年に開業した現在も、日々新たなデザインが施されてゆく「未完成ホテル」として、Lemon tree hotelは成長を続けています。
それは、過去の憧れと、挫折という経験から生まれた、私の「幸せ」を具現化した場所です。
“The Luxury of Restoration”: The Birth of Lemon Tree Hotel
On Ogijima, there was a need to preserve an old kominka (traditional Japanese house) built on a unique site, and thus the “Lemon Tree Hotel Project” was launched.
With the support of Mr. Ryo Abe, an expert in island architecture, we conceived methods for the island’s unique circular economy and are continuously designing and refining the hotel to harmonize with the island’s location and nature.
Even after opening in 2024, Lemon Tree Hotel continues to grow as an “unfinished hotel,” with new designs being implemented daily. It is a place that embodies my “happiness,” born from past admiration and the experience of setbacks.
未来へ向かう、私たちの存在意義
私たちは、この宿を、単なる宿泊施設だとは考えていません。
訪れる人が本来の自分を取り戻せる「聖域」であり、「繕うことのラグジュアリー」を体現する場所です。
ここでは、古民家の歴史を活かし、島の自然素材を使い、失われたものに新しい命を吹き込んでいます。
そして、この場所を、私だけではなく、私たちの物語に共感してくれる仲間と共につくり上げていきたいと思っています。
Our Raison d’être Moving Towards the Future
We do not consider this hotel to be merely an accommodation facility.
It is a “sanctuary” where visitors can rediscover their true selves, a place that embodies “the luxury of restoration.” Here, we leverage the history of the old kominka, use natural island materials, and breathe new life into what was lost.
And we want to build this place not just for ourselves, but together with companions who resonate with our story.
